The Danish Brigade also called DANFORCE was a military unit that was established in Sweden on November 15, 1943 during World War II. It consisted of Danish resistance people and military personnel who had come to Sweden as refugees. The brigade was part of the Danish resistance movement and thus under the command of the Freedom Council.
When the brigade was the largest, it comprised about 5,000 soldiers and lottery tickets, which were distributed as follows:
Brigade Staff - 4 Light Battalions - 1 Heavy Battalion - Pioneer Command - Armored Guard Compact - Morter Company - Field and Order Police - Fire Command - Work Command - Motor Car Corporation - Sanitation Company - The Danish Flotilla - Air Force - Cargo Corps - The Danish Flotilla - Air Force - Cargo Corps
The brigade came to Denmark on May 5, 1945 after Germany's surrender. It was landed in Helsingør and the day after the train went to Hellerup Station, from where it marched towards Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the brigade's route was revealed in newspapers and the radio, so during the march, the 4th Battalion, which was to move to the accommodation Matthæusgades Skole, was shot from the roofs of Danes in German service, which resulted in the 3 fallen and 14 wounded on the brigade's side.
When the battalion, at around 8.15 pm, was in the junction Jagtvej / Rantzausgade, fire was opened, automatic weapons, against the column - from the houses opposite the National Archives and from the rooftops to the north. There were also reports later about scattered shooting from the National Archives' garden.
Private 308 Hirsch Leib Zneider was killed on the spot by a shot in the heart, while two others - private 236 Freddy Helge Otto Mønsted and private 4088 Arne Olesen - were severely wounded and later died. In addition, 14 others were slightly injured and one got shock. A memorial stone has been erected for those killed by the National Archives. The brigade was among others trained in urban combat tactics and the defeated enemy in 20 minutes, resulting in 5 killed and 4 captured collaborators.
The brigade was accommodated at Copenhagen schools:
1. Battalion: Havremarkens Skole, Husumgade (Nørrebro)
2. Battalion: School of France Street (Amagerbro)
3. Battalion: Oehlenschlægersgades School (Vesterbro)
4. Battalion: Matthæusgades Skole (Vesterbro)
Later, the brigade only encountered lighter exercises, and the brigade had a total of 3 fallen and 25 wounded. The brigade was responsible for security and guarding duties and was officially dissolved on July 10, 1945. However, the pioneer command continued to help in the clearance of the minefields that the Germans had made along the West Coast until the end of October 1945. In total, 22 soldiers lost and lotter life during the education in Sweden and at the service in Denmark.
